Colorado ENT & Allergy is committed to the scientific advancement of medicine and the development of promising new medical treatments. This philosophy led to the founding of our Clinical Research Department in 1999. Since then, we have participated in numerous clinical trials, ranging from treatments for chronic sinusitis to medications for ear infections.
Clinical trials are conducted to examine promising new treatments or procedures for patients. A clinical trial is only done when there is good reason to believe that the treatment, test, or procedure being studied may be better than a current one. Treatments used in clinical trials are often found to have real benefits and may lead to tomorrow’s standard treatment. Colorado ENT & Allergy is currently participating in two clinical trials, researching treatments of tinnitus and chronic sinusitis.
People volunteer to participate in clinical trials for a number of reasons. They may simply want to help in the advancement of science or they may be suffering from a disease for which a good treatment does not currently exist. Also, they may join in a clinical trial hoping to improve the medical care they receive.
Safety is one of the largest concerns for most clinical trial volunteers. The companies affiliated with our clinical trials have written protocols that the physician principal investigator (one of our CENT&A physicians) extensively reviews. The Food and Drug Administration oversees each process of the clinical trial, and an Institutional Review Board validates each study protocol and ensures the rights and safety of each volunteer.
The Center for Information and Study on Clinical Research Participation offers patients, their family members, and the general public an Education Center to help learn about clinical research and what it means to be a clinical research participant. Please see their website at www.ciscrp.org.
