General Preoperative Instructions
In order to assist your surgery, you must:
- For 2 weeks prior to the date of surgery, you should not take any aspirin or any anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Pediaprofen, and Naprosyn). Tylenol (acetaminophen) is acceptable. Also, pain medications such as Darvocet, Celebrex, and Vicodin are acceptable.
- If you are on Plavix, you need to stop medication before surgery. DO NOT STOP THIS MEDICATION WITHOUT FIRST TALKING TO YOUR PRIMARY CARE OR PRESCRIBING PHYSICIAN AT LEAST 10 DAYS PRIOR TO SURGERY.
- If you are on Coumadin, you will need to stop this medication before surgery. DO NOT STOP THIS MEDICATION WITHOUT FIRST TALKING TO YOUR PRIMARY CARE OR PRESCRIBING PHYSICIAN AT LEAST 10 DAYS PRIOR TO SURGERY.
- If you are on Lovenox, this will also need to be stopped. DO NOT STOP THIS MEDICATION WITHOUT FIRST TALKING TO YOUR PRIMARY CARE OR PRESCRIBING PHYSICIAN AT LEAST 5 DAYS PRIOR TO SURGERY.
- If you have a personal or family history of any bleeding disorders, including Von Willebrand's disease or hemophilia, please let your physician know prior to surgery.
- In addition to the medications listed above, also do not take diet pills, herbs, and natural remedies. Examples include but are not limited to Echinacea, Ma Huang, Garlic, Ginger, Ginkgo biloba, Ginseng, Kava, St. John's Wort, Valerian, Vitamin E, etc., as these often have ingredients that increase bleeding risk.
- Adults and children age 4 and over: NOTHING TO EAT OR DRINK AFTER MIDNIGHT!!! Infants and Children under the age of 4: Please check with your physician for fasting guidelines.
- Bring a list of all current medications to your preop visit. You will be advised what medications you may take the morning of surgery. You may take any medications authorized by your physician with a small sip of water the morning of the surgery. Do not use facial makeup
- Arrange transportation to and from the hospital or surgery center. YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO DRIVE. The hospital staff can notify the people involved with your transportation when it is time to pick you up if necessary.
- You will be given orders for any required labs or services (EKG, Chest X-ray, etc.) during your preop visit here in our office. Please contact your insurance company to verify which lab you are to utilize for your labwork.
- If you are scheduled at Audubon Ambulatory Surgery Center, Audubon ASC @ St. Francis, or The Surgery Center at Printer's Park, you may utilize your usual laboratory to have your labs done. If you usually have your labs drawn at your primary physician's office, this is also acceptable.
- If you are scheduled for surgery at one of the area hospitals, you need to contact the hospital to pre-register and set up your labwork. You may call as soon as your surgery is scheduled; however, keep in mind you will not have the required orders for your pre-op labs until your office visit.
- If your surgery is scheduled at Penrose Hospital or St. Francis Hospital, please call 776-8010 to make this appointment. Be sure to tell the scheduler at which hospital your surgery is to take place.
- If your surgery is scheduled at Memorial Central Hospital or Memorial North Hospital, please call 365-5240 to make this appointment. Be sure to tell the scheduler at which hospital your surgery is to take place.
- If your insurance requires special laboratory use other than the hospital, please plan to go there following your pre-op appointment.
- If overnight admission to the hospital seems indicated, it will be arranged at that time. If you have not already been given a postoperative visit, it will be given to you prior to your discharge from the hospital.
- Postoperative prescriptions will be given to you prior to your discharge. If you should need a refill please call your pharmacy and they in turn will get in touch with our office. No routine medications will be reordered outside of clinic hours (Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM).
- We will contact your insurance company to pre-certify your surgery prior to your scheduled date. This is not a guarantee of payment. Claims are paid according to your insurance coverage at the time of service.
- Please remember, if your insurance requires a referral to see a specialist, you must have a current referral in place prior to your surgery. Contact your primary care physician to obtain this. If there is no current referral, we cannot get authorization for your surgery and may have to cancel or reschedule.
