Not your Grandmother’s Hearing Aid Anymore!

By Kim Welsh

You know you’re struggling in many listening environments but you just can’t fathom wearing a hearing aid. They’re BIG and bulky and you’re just not ready for it. You’re too young and you don’t want anyone to think you are getting old. You remember how your grandmother or uncle or dad hated wearing their hearing aid and it always ended up in a drawer somewhere. Well…..Hearing aids have changed!

Today’s technology has dramatically changed how hearing aids function and what they look like. Hearing aids can function completely automatically without you ever having to touch a button. The hearing aids today have what the industry is calling “Artificial Intelligence.” They continuously monitor your environments for both speech and background noise making different adjustments to both depending on the environment and who is talking. You can also have the flexibility of having a hearing aid with more than one program that you can decide to switch to. Music programs, programs for noise, telephones and a wide variety of other options can be selected and customized to meet your personal needs. The hearing aids can get rid of that pesky noise called “feedback.” The hearing aid will recognize when it is squealing and then eliminate it. The newest hearing aid employs “Bluetooth” technology. This allows a set of hearing aids to communicate with each other, allowing for adjustments to program and volume to be changed in both hearing aids by adjusting only one hearing aid. The Bluetooth capability also allows the user to connect or link a set of hearing aids to a personal Bluetooth phone, iPod, computer or any other Bluetooth device. This gives the best sound quality and connection for the person based on that person’s hearing loss.

So, what will a hearing aid with capabilities like this cost?

Cost can be quite variable depending on the level of technology chosen, size and features. When deciding where to get your hearing aid(s) and what kind, be sure you compare feature to feature and service to service. Comfort with price and the level of service will help in determining your overall satisfaction with hearing aids. Always remember, you should receive a trial period with the option of returning the hearing aids for a refund. Many times a small fee may be retained by the establishment you purchase your hearing aids from but it should not exceed 5% of the original purchase price.
