What is Allergy? - Part 1

By Sarah Toth MS, PA-C

Over the past 12 months Colorado Otolaryngology Associates, PC has developed and implemented an allergy program. The program is now starting the second year and we want to make sure all our patients are aware of this service.

Allergy is a condition in which there is an abnormal response of the body’s immune system which occurs when a substance is eaten, inhaled or touched. Any substance that initiates this abnormal immune response is called an allergen. This reaction can cause symptoms that adversely affect your quality of life.

Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Allergy Physicians (also known as Otolaryngic Allergists) are specially trained to identify and treat those areas of your body that commonly manifest allergy symptoms and associated diseases. Allergies may contribute to such symptoms as chronic nasal congestion, postnasal drainage, nasal polyps, diminished sense of smell, headaches, hearing loss, dizziness, fatigue, or chronic sore throats. For more than 30 years, there has been a significant worldwide increase in the prevalence of allergic diseases.

At Colorado Otolaryngology Associates, our goal is to diagnose, treat and manage all relevant causes of upper respiratory symptoms including allergy. We are able to perform allergy testing, which consists of skin prick tests followed by injections of small amounts of allergens beneath the skin. Allergens that are tested include animal dander, dust, mold and pollen (from weeds, trees or grasses). If we determine that allergy injections (known as immunotherapy) would be beneficial, we are able to provide this care in our office. This enables us to closely monitor patient’s progress and provide quality continuity of care.

At your next visit to our office, consider talking with your doctor to see if allergy testing may be beneficial for you. If you have any questions about allergy testing or immunotherapy, please contact Sarah Toth, MS, PA-C at 719-867-7814.
