Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation Therapy by Colorado ENT

Learn about Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation Therapy.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that affects 22 million Americans. If it is left untreated, it can lead to devastating effects on your heart and brain health, impairing quality of life and increasing motor vehicle and occupational accident risks.

Sleep Apnea is a condition where you stop breathing while asleep. The person experiencing sleep apnea does not usually know they have it, but witnesses observe pauses followed by a loud snort or gasping for air.

Each of these pauses can shift you into lighter stages of sleep. You may wake up and not even remember it. This leads to poor sleep quality, and extreme daytime sleepiness.

Treatment for Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea severity can be directly correlated with weight gain and loss in adults. Physician’s frequently recommend weight loss as one of the ways to help treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

CPAP or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machine pressurizes air that is delivered through a hose and mast into the airway while sleeping.  The steady air flow keeps the airway open improving sleep quality and respiration.

While CPAP is an effective treatment, studies show that people don’t continue with this treatment and adherence rates can be less than 50%.

Colorado ENT & Allergy is now offering a breakthrough treatment option for obstructive sleep apnea patients unable to use or get benefit from CPAP called Inspire® Upper Airway Stimulation Therapy.

Inspire® therapy is a breakthrough FDA-approved  treatment for sleep apnea. It can bring relief to people that are not able to use a CPAP machine.

The device is implanted on the chest, just beneath the skin. The procedure is fast, simple, is an outpatient procedure and most patients return home that same day. When going to bed, Inspire® is turned on with a remote.  Breathing is monitored throughout the duration of sleep to keep airways open.

Inspire® Upper Airway Stimulation Therapy is a safe and effective new surgical procedure now available for the treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Sleep Apnea Surgery with Inspire® Airway Stimulation Therapy

Inspire® Airway Stimulation Therapy is a surgical procedure involving the placement of a device as well as stimulation electrodes on the targeted branches of the hypoglassal nerve. The electrodes deliver mild stimulation to the key airway muscles. This procedure synchronizes the stimulation of specific motor nerves controlling the tongue and soft palate to keep airways opened during sleep.

Inspire® Airway Stimulation Surgery is commonly performed under general anesthesia. The surgery takes from 2 to 3 hours.

Three small incisions are made. One under the chin, one below the collar bone and the last on the side of the chest. During specific circumstances, a one-night stay may be required. Pain can vary, but most patients take over the counter pain meds and resume strenuous activities in just a few weeks.

If you are suffering sleep apnea, this breakthrough obstructive sleep apnea treatment may work for you. Inspire® Surgery might offer the relief that you need.

The goal of this therapy is to synchronize the stimulation of specific motor nerves controlling both the tongue and soft palate so that the airway is not obstructed during sleep.
